The Project

Berlin Civil War Heroes Project

Eleven Black men from Berlin, Connecticut, served in the 29th Connecticut Infantry Regiment during the Civil War — a unit that faced not only the dangers of battle but the injustices of a divided nation. Three of these men — Sergeant James L. Smith, Sergeant William Morrison, and Corporal William Sidney — never returned home.

Their names are absent from every one of Berlin’s military monuments, and their valor remains unrecognized by the United States military.

Our goal is to raise $100,000 to expand our story state-wide and honor Berlin's Fallen Heroes.

About Berlin Civil War Heroes Project

Our Mission

Our Project's mission is to secure the Congressional Medal of Honor for these fallen heroes from Berlin and permanently honor them in their hometown. At the same time, we are expanding our 4X award-winning documentary, The 29th Connecticut, into a feature-length film to share their full story with audiences across the country.

Tell the full Connecticut Story of The 29th

Expanding our documentary from 15 minutes to 45 - 60 minutes will allow us to tell the full story of The 29th Connecticut and honor the heroism and sacrifices African-American men from all across the state made for the state and our nation!
